Rare Cask Society officially started on 22 July 2016 and officially begin trading on December 16, but our journey started a little over 12 months before that over a wonderful night of catch up.
At the time, there was a growing trend about whisky.Whisky was gaining traction in the younger generation, fueled by Jim Murry’s review, wonderful whiskies from Japan and Taiwan, it became a cultural adoption, a momentum shift from the West to the East!
In 2015, I remember returning from a two weeks business trip in the UK and bought my first bottle of Japanese whisky, Yoichi 20, at the wonderful Le Clos at Dubai airport.(One good reason to stop by Dubai for transit). At the time, I thought nothing of it, but I share the news with my business partner, a good friend I have known for 20 years. Upon hearing about my whisky purchase, he opened a secret cupboard under his island bench, a full collection of rare whisky, meticulously placed side by side…clearly, whisky has been part of his life for a long time!
A simple statement ‘let’s taste some!’, a generous spirit, a few shots of good quality whisky is all it takes to generate a new idea and a new partnership. Then, the learning begins…in fact, it doesn’t stop.We continue to learn from customers, distilleries and artists of what value we could add.
